How Do You Make the Colour Purple? Check the Swatch

That last distinction saves paint. A classroom wheel describes relationships between ideal colours. A tube contains a particular pigment, binder and sometimes several pigments hidden behind one inviting colour name. The label on the back is more useful than the name on the front.

What does a successful purple swatch look like?

A successful swatch holds its hue through four tests: thick application, a thin scrape or wash, a dry sample and a small tint. If the thick paint looks purple while the thin edge turns rusty, greenish or grey, the mixture has lost chroma. More paint will only make that problem harder to see.

For a reference that can be described more precisely than “royal purple,” use Munsell 5P 4/12 as a strong middle-purple target. In that notation, 5P is the midpoint of the purple hue sector, value 4 is the lightness level on a 0-to-10 scale, and chroma 12 records saturation. Rochester Institute of Technology’s Munsell Color Science Laboratory lists 5P 4/12 in its real.dat renotation table at CIE x 0.2778, y 0.1808 and luminance factor Y 12.000, calculated for Illuminant C and the CIE 1931 2° observer.

The reference does not decree what “purple” must mean. Here, purple means the P-family target; violet refers to a bluer result. Paint ranges and fashion labels may use those names differently. A lilac needs a higher value; a wine-purple leans red; a blue-violet sits nearer the purple-blue sector. Choose one before correcting the palette, or every adjustment moves the finish line.

Why do some red-and-blue mixtures turn brown or grey?

“Any red plus any blue makes purple” is the dominant bad recipe. Golden Artist Colors’ Color Mixing Guide says the selected red and blue can “dramatically change” the secondary mixture, and its professional colours have unequal tinting strengths. Equal quantities therefore do not guarantee either equal influence or high chroma.

Colour bias explains the familiar failed puddle. An orange-leaning red carries the mixture towards yellow; a green-leaning blue does the same from the other side. In subtractive paint mixing, that extra spectral absorption suppresses the clean violet region. Painters call the result muddy because the swatch approaches a neutral brown-grey even though only two tubes were squeezed.

White cannot extract that unwanted bias. Golden’s guide says Titanium White raises coverage and lightens value, while Zinc White makes a subtler, more transparent tint. Either white reveals the existing mixture at a lighter value. A dull purple becomes a pale dull purple.

Black is equally blunt. Golden’s guide states that adding a complement reduces chroma and changes value, which is exactly the damage a clean purple does not need. The first repair is a better red-blue pair, followed by a fresh two-pigment mix. Trying to rescue a contaminated puddle usually spends more paint than restarting it.

Which pigments make a clean purple?

Read the Colour Index codes. For the repeatable starting pair, choose quinacridone magenta marked PR122 and ultramarine blue marked PB29. The Golden Heavy Body technical sheets classify PR122 as a transparent synthetic organic pigment and PB29 as a semi-transparent synthetic inorganic pigment. Each tube is single-pigment, so the purple begins with exactly two pigments.

Those opacity ratings belong to the source paints. Golden publishes no separate opacity classification for a hand-mixed PR122–PB29 purple. Because one component is transparent and the other semi-transparent, test the mixture over a black-and-white line and treat the film as semi-transparent for planning. Ground colour, film thickness and added white can change the apparent coverage.

A colour name cannot substitute for the codes. “Permanent red,” “primary blue” and even “violet” may be single pigments or convenience mixtures. A convenience purple containing three pigments has already surrendered some control: the next addition interacts with all three, whether the front label admits that complexity or not.

How do you mix and test purple without wasting paint?

Use a white, non-absorbent palette and the same surface intended for the work. A ratio tested on acrylic paper is evidence for that paint and ground; viscosity, tinting strength and absorbency prevent it becoming a universal formula.

  1. Name the target. Place a colour chip, object or a 5P 4/12 reference beside the mixing area. Decide whether the desired purple is red-biased, centred or blue-biased.
  2. Measure the starting pair. Put down 1.0 mL of PR122 and 1.0 mL of PB29 for a 1:1 ratio by volume. Golden’s guide uses measured “parts” for repeatable recipes and warns that professional pigments differ in tinting strength.
  3. Make a diagnostic swatch. Paint one full-strength block, drag its edge into a thin film, and cross a black-and-white line. For watercolour, pull the wash into clean water instead of crossing an opaque test line.
  4. Dry before deciding. Label the ratio and wait for the acrylic swatch to dry. Change only one variable in the next sample: add 0.25 part magenta for a warmer trial or 0.25 part blue for a cooler one.

The sequence produces a useful trail: 1:1, 1.25:1 and 1:1.25 can be compared after drying. A random extra dab leaves no recipe to repeat.

How much will acrylic purple change as it dries?

Acrylic commonly darkens as its milky wet binder clears. Golden Artist Colors author and senior designer Todd Leinbach describes the mechanism directly: the binder “appears milky or white when wet and clarifies as it dries, resulting in a darkening of colors.” His Just Paint guidance recommends mixing one step lighter and drying a test application.

Manufacturers’ guidance diverges at product level. Golden warns of darkening in its Heavy Body colours; Winsor & Newton says its Professional Acrylic uses a binder that is translucent when wet and clear when dry, producing “virtually no colour shift.” Each statement concerns that maker’s formulation. The exact brand still needs its own dry swatch.

That one-step allowance is practical guidance, rather than a universal instrument reading. Golden does not publish one wet-to-dry ΔE for every PR122–PB29 ratio, film thickness and ground. A defensible CIE comparison would need wet and dry L*a*b* readings taken with a named illuminant, observer and measurement geometry. Without those conditions, a precise ΔE would be decoration masquerading as data.

Watch hue as well as darkness. A dry swatch that becomes deeper yet keeps its purple identity is behaving as the binder guidance predicts. A swatch whose thin edge was already brown-grey has a pigment-pair problem; drying merely makes the failure easier to see.

How should purple be lightened or darkened?

For light acrylic purple, move a small portion of the successful mix aside and add Titanium White gradually. Golden classifies Titanium White as the stronger, opaque mixing white; it raises value and coverage while reducing the visual intensity of the purple. Zinc White changes opacity less, though every white creates a tint.

Watercolour gets lighter through dilution and the white paper beneath it. The QoR technical sheets classify PR122 as transparent and staining, while PB29 is semi-transparent, semi-staining and granulating. More water lightens the wash without introducing a third pigment. White watercolour or gouache makes an opaque pastel with different handling.

To deepen a clean purple, first use the original two-pigment mixture at greater concentration. A little extra PB29 makes a cooler dark; a little extra PR122 makes a warmer dark. If the hue must stay fixed, compare both trials dry rather than reaching for black. The darkest useful version may retain more chroma at value 3 or 4 than a blackened sample at value 2.
